There are many blogs and Youtube channels with information on how to distinguish a fake Michael Kors watch from the real thing. Unfortunately some of the information is misleading and would very quickly convince an owner of a genuine Michael Kors watch that it was fake. We have been selling Michael Kors since 2005 and wanted to share our knowledge on how to tell the difference between a real and fake Michael Kors watch.
Michael Kors back in the day used to be a solid made fashion watch but due to its massive boost in popularity in late 2013 especially in the United Kingdom. The manufacturer Fossil has failed to maintain the quality level which we have come to expect from Michael Kors, these quality issues or manufacturing inconsistencies have caused people to believe they have a fake watch, or a blogger blogging these issues as a notable indication of a fake watch.
There is no such thing as a good Michael Kors fake. This is because the people that make the fake Michael Kors, also make the likes of fake Hublot, Cartier, and Rolex. They will not spend the time and effort on crafting a premier level watch to its finest detail, as there is simply just no money to be made, compared to that of spending time crafting a Luxury level watch such as a Rolex. So if you have a Michael Kors watch that might have something slightly cosmetically different to that of your friends or another one you may have seen in a store, there is a high chance that it’s a genuine watch with a possible quality defect.
Another issue is Michael Kors updates old models all the time, and the newly updated and old watches end up on the market at the same time, which can also cause confusion of its authenticity. An example of this is the MK5774 Michael Kors watch, which was updated with a new back and face.

Packaging can be used as a indication to wither a watch is fake or not but not a sole indicator.
You do not need to be an expert to see right away this box is a fake. This is the most commonly used box for fake Michael Kors watches that are purchased from the likes of Aliexpress and DHGate.

Again another poor example of a Michael Kors watch box, it is commonly used for fake Michael Kors Watches that have a PU strap, the lettering is just a decal and is easily pealed off.

This box is used normally for what we call ”Artisan Fakes” which are watches that never existed in the Michael Kors range, normally these styles are brightly coloured and have a rubber strap.

A lot of people are under the impression that this box is a fake, and if you get your watch in a box like this then your watch is a fake, but this beautiful tan Pu box was the original box used for Michael Kors watches. It is not uncommon to see watches on sale on the likes of eBay with this style of box.

Another genuine box with a bad rep, like example 1 a lot of people believe if your watch comes in this box it is fake. This style was used in the USA and never really hit the European market, it was the predecessor to the tan box but was short lived, and was soon replaced by example 4.

This genuine box is reserved for limited edition watches, you would never find a standard Michael Kors sold in this particular box. If you were to receive a watch in this box that was not a limited edition then there would be concern about its authenticity.

Unfortunately Michael Kors is not very consistent when it comes to packaging, so if your lining or cushion in this style of box is a different shade of brown in comparison to another one, again do not stress that your watch could possibly be a fake. You can clearly see in the picture below that all three cushions taking from genuine Michael Kors boxes are all different colours and material. Michael Kors is continually updating packing as well as their products which results in different variations of the same style on the market at the same time. As mentioned previously this is the main reason why packaging cannot be used as a sole indicator in authenticating a Michael Kors watch.

One main giveaway with fake boxes made in this style is they do not have a batch code stamp on the bottom of the box. Over the years of authenticating watches for people the one thing that was missing from the fake boxes was the batch code stamp.

The Manual
The Michael Kors manual like the packaging is inconsistent in print and cannot be used to solely judge the authenticity of a watch . Again like the cushions you can see three genuine manuals which are all slightly different in tone.

Distinguishing a real Michael kors watch from a fake is very easy if not by first glance but certainly by touch. As previously mentioned, despite what you may have heard or been told there is no such thing as a good Michael Kors fake.
Weight:
Weight is one of the key indicators in telling the difference between a real and fake Michael Kors watch. Genuine Michael Kors watches of the same style will vary in weight , but only to a slight degree of up to 4 grams of difference. This could be due to material changes, or the coating level on the watches. A fake Michael Kors watch will have a massive degree in weight with up to 40 grams in difference to it’s genuine counterpart.

Tip: To prolong the life of the coating of your Michael Kors watch, do not wear it when applying perfume to the wrist, when applying perfume to the wrist insure it is fully dried before putting your watch back on. The alcohol in the perfume will react with the PVD coating and will speed up the oxidization process.
Note: If your new Michael Kors watch bracelet is not as well coated between the links as the outer and inner bracelet it does not make it a fake. This is just a common issue found in Michael Kors watches.

A fake Micheal kors watch will contain all the same information but will fall short to the meaning of the numbers. They will normally have the wrong model number and manufacturing date on the watch, it is common to see even letters in the manufacturing date on fake watches.

Add a caption Fake Michael Kors, notice the model number is wrong, and the manufacturing date is dated before the model was released.
Note: The manufacturing date is stamped as the following format: 121503, which means the 12th March 2015 which is the date the watch was made. It can be useful if you know your styles release date. For example if your model is a 2015 model but the date stamp says 2003, you would know for sure you have a fake, as it’s manufacturing date is well before the models release.
As mentioned earlier in the blog some watches receive updates. If the information on the back of the watch is correct but the layout is different compared to another of the same style, don’t be alarmed. It is common to see this in Michael Kors watches.

We hope this guide has given you a better understanding on how to distinguish fake from real, and that you just can not rely on one element like the packaging to authentic a watch. We always recommend purchasing from a reliable seller like ourselves eLux Boutique when purchasing your Michael Kors watch. If you have purchased elsewhere and still unsure, take it to a reputable store where you can compare it to a similar model. As mentioned many times there is no such thing as a good fake so keep that in mind, and 99.9% of the time it’s just a quality issue with the MK watch that may lead you to think it may not be genuine, or the style has been updated.

Knowing how to find the serial number on watches provides vital information about its history. You can learn facts about when it was made, who made it and whether it’s counterfeit or the real deal. Watch manufacturers placed serial numbers in different locations on a watch; some easy to see, and others, can only be found if you remove certain parts of a watch. Finding the serial numbers for Rolex, Bulova and Waltham watches can be a little tricky and without a steady hand, may require a professional.
Use a magnifying glass and flip a Bulova watch over. The face of the watch should be facing down. On the back of Bulova watches there is a serial number engraved in the back. All Bulova serial numbers consist of one letter, such as, A; followed by one number. Every letter in the alphabet was used for Bulova watches except for the letters O, Q, R and S.
Mk Watch Serial Number Lookup
Remove the watch case from the back of a Waltham pocket watch, using a precision tool set. Use a magnifying glass to locate the notch for easy removal. Look for the serial number on the movement, or turning parts on the inside of the watch. Waltham produced watches from 1852 to 1957, and started with a serial number of 50 in the first year and ended with serial number 35,000,000.
Mk Watch Serial Number
Remove the watch bracelet from a Rolex watch using a small precision tool set. The serial number is in between the lugs, located directly above or below the six and the 12. Since 2005, Rolex has engraved the serial numbers on the inside face of the watch, right underneath the six. Use a magnifying glass to see this serial number clearly.
